HOW TO INSTALL A HIDDEN SOURCE FOUNTAIN

F1.jpg (56202 bytes) What you'll need:
a 30 gallon plastic pond tub
a 140-200 gph fountain pump
3 ft of 3./8" or 1/2" fountain tubing
3' x 3' hardware cloth
a 5 gal plastic bucket (or bricks)
(all available at your local hardware store)

STEP ONE:  Dig a hole wide enough and deep
enough for your bucket.  Take a break.

STEP TWO:  Place your plastic tub in the hole and level it with the top edge just above ground level.   Backfill with leftover dirt.

STEP THREE: Construct a base to set your fountain on.  In this case I am using a five gallon laundry detergent bucket which is 15" high, the same as the 15" depth of the tub.   You could use bricks or blocks.  The important thing is that the height of your base be level with the tub's rim.

STEP FIVE:  Using tin snips or aviator's shears, cut a circle out of your hardware cloth that is two inches greater in diamer than your tub.

STEP SIX:  Cut a small 1 1/2" - 2" hole in the center of your harware cloth circle.  On one edge cut a small notch out where your pump hose will exit.  Make a door for pump access by cutting out a rectangle on the edge, reinforcing it with a stiffer gauge galvanized wire threaded through the cloth and extending over the edges.  Hinge your door with wire loops. STEP EIGHT:  Thread your fountain tubing through the hole in your fountain with the top edge flush with the top of the fountain., the rest hanging out the bottom.  This next part is tricky and it helps to have an assistant.  Lower the fountain onto the base, snaking the tubing through the hole in the tub.

STEP NINE:  Open your little access trap door, reach in and retrieve the tubing from one of the holes you cut in the bottom of the tub.  Insert your pump and connect it to the hose. Fill up the tub with water.  Plug your pump into a GFI (ground fault interrupter) outlet for safety.   Adjust the pump flow to your liking.

STEP TEN:   Cover the top of your hardware cloth with large gravel out beyond the edges of the tub.  Hide your cord with mulch.  Admire your work.

Maintenance:  Give your fountain a drink whenever you water your garden.  Don't let it run dry or the pump will burn out.  Clean the pump filter if you notice poor pump performance.  Remove the pump during the winter.
